There should always be a challenge to gaining land, we are currently gaining territories like there is no tomorrow. I'm trying to make it more realistic by extending the territorial transition rate to 3 real life days (15 days in the RP). It is not possible to conquer a third of China (size reference) or any other territory in 15 days and we must accept that. We may be rapidly advancing in Technology but cars for example, remain rather rare in society and cars have yet to be fully implemented into nation armies. Some nations do not even have electricity! And as for naval troops, the only technology that directly enhanced them was Sonar. Perhaps we need more Naval Techs. But Sonar is not going to help you break through ice. In the RP timeframe it is now September, and the opening of the Northern Passage above Russia has closed because the 2-month timespan has ended.
Gemini, land should never be free. Zuzu tried to make the RP more realistic by arguing morals with me when he wanted to expand his Empire, it was a beneficial argument as it tried to provide realism. Everyone, no doubt, is planning on taking territory after territory and the RP is slowly losing it's touch. Realism is slowly being dissolved along with reasoning. I did state to IonicCraze when he took over the History page, "We have the events but I need help making the details. Italy declared war on Sicily, okay, but we need reasoning for it." That reasoning, we never did get. For one, implementing that players pay for land in money or resources is a great idea as it's realistic. Remember, people live in these unclaimed territories, they just don't have governments. They still think, they're still humans. I doubt everyone would be happy if we gave the Asian provinces governments and leaders so they could actually fight back.
